Spain warning: A phone call regarding a parcel can cost you your WhatsApp

A quick call about an ‘urgent delivery’ might not sound like a big deal – but Spanish police say it’s now one of the easiest ways for scammers to take over your WhatsApp account. It only takes a six-digit number sent to your mobile phone.

It always starts out the same. Your phone rings. The person on the other line says that they are a delivery driver. You have a package for you, there’s been a mistake, or the driver just needs to confirm some details before dropping off. So far, nothing unusual.

Then, they will mention a specific code.

They say they’re going to send you a number by SMS and ask you to read it back so they can ‘complete the delivery’. This sounds like a routine. It’s a routine that people do without thinking. It’s the most common mistake.

It’s not a delivery – it’s your WhatsApp

The message you received is not linked to any parcel. It’s the WhatsApp verification code – the one used to activate your account on a new phone.

As soon as you share it with others, your account will no longer be yours. No delay or warning is required. You’re just logged out as someone else logs into the system.

The next surprise is shocking

Once inside, scammers don’t sit around. Scammers go straight to the contacts.

Messages start going out – usually something casual at first, just enough to sound like you. Then the question comes. Money, quick transfers, and sometimes more personal things.

It’s because they know it’s you. This is the point. In some cases, multiple contacts are approached in minutes.

Before you know what’s happening, the damage has already spread.

The detail most people miss

This scam does not depend on anything technical. It is based on a bad habit.

People are accustomed to receiving codes. Apps send them. Apps can send them. Sometimes delivery services send notifications as well. It’s not suspicious when someone asks.

One rule remains the same: WhatsApp codes are never to be shared. Not with a delivery person. Not with a customer service. No one should call you without prior notice.

Why it works easily

Calls are always made with a sense urgency. The parcel must be delivered immediately. The driver is awaiting. The problem needs to be fixed quickly.

It is the pressure that matters. This pressure makes people react rather than pause. The situation may seem familiar at first, but there are no immediate red flags.

That combination – something ordinary mixed with a bit of urgency – is exactly what makes it effective.

If it happens, act quickly

Don’t wait if you have already shared the code, or if you find yourself suddenly logged out from WhatsApp.

You can try logging in again with your number. WhatsApp will send you a new code. In many cases, this is enough to regain control.

It’s also important to let your contacts know about the situation as soon as you can. You can prevent things from getting worse by sending a quick message to your contacts.

The cybersecurity institute of Spain INCIBEIt is also recommended to report the phone number and save any calls or messages.

Their helpline (017) is available 24 hours a day if you get stuck or are unsure of what to next do.

A scam that relies on a split moment

No malware is involved. There’s no complicated setup. You only need a phone, a story that is believable, and an instant where you do not think twice.

It’s that simple. Scammers are relying heavily on that exact strategy.
