Diógenes Jug Band brings roaring 1920s feel to Clarence Jazz Club in Torremolinos

Spanish revival trio Diógenes Jug Band heads to the intimate Clarence Jazz Club in Torremolinos for an evening of joyful, improvised music straight from the early 20th century. Blues, ragtime and swing fans can look forward to an energetic performance starting at 10pm on Saturday, March 21.

Reviving classic jug band and washboard spirit

Diógenes Jug Band channels the roots of American popular music from the 1910s to the 1940s, born in southern US cities like Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville. The musicians combine Afro-American influences to create a lively sound that is full of improvisation. The hallmark of their music is the use of homemade instruments, made out everyday items, like jugs that produce bass tones, washboards used for percussion and cigar box guitars.

This DIY approach is a tribute to the original jug bands that performed at rural fairs, parties in urban areas, and clubs. It makes music fun and accessible for all communities.

Meet the trio

Enrique Real is responsible for the washtub and vocals. His background includes rockabilly, blues and rock and roll outfits. Ana Laffarga’s lead vocals are accompanied by the canjolele and whistles. She also plays the kazoo and percussion. Her theatre background and musical training add to the style. José Manuel Pérez strums the wine box guitar, bringing expertise from pop-rock and funky tribute bands.

Together they create an evocative visual spectacle reminiscent of the 1920s or 1930s. Authentic costumes and props transport audiences to another era.
