Spain’s Electric Shock as Power Prices Rise. Since the start of the war in Iran, wholesale energy prices have risen by 700% in Spain.

Spain’s Electric Shock: Power prices are surging
The price of electricity in Spain has risen dramatically since the war in Iran. The wholesale cost of electricy has jumped from €15 per megawatt hour on the 1st of March to €119.42 per mwh on the 10th March. The rising cost of oil is responsible for the rise in prices.
Energy bills for households on the Costa Del Sol Costs are up an average of 15% from the same time last year.
⚡ Spanish Electricity Bills: 3 Simple Steps to Reduce them
- Learn the “Valle Hours” (off-Peak).
The majority of Spanish tariffs, especially the PVPC, are cheaper at “Valle” times (usually from 12:00am to 8:00am on weekends and holidays)
Top Tip: Set your dishwasher or washing machine to run at 7:00 AM before you head out—it’s the easiest way to slash your daily costs.
- Check Your “Potencia Contratada”.
- Take a look at the Potencia (kW), which is charged on your bill. Many expats are paying more than necessary for their electricity in Spain.
You may be paying too much if your “lead”, or breaker, never trips when AC and the oven are both on. Reducing your contracted power by just 1.1kW can save you around €50 per year.
- The “Ghost Power Drain”
The “standby” light on your TV, router, or kitchen appliance is a silent killer of your budget.
Use a power strip that has a switch to control your entertainment center. You can cut your “phantom” load by 10% if you turn it off every night.
