The battle of the festivals: How Madrid and Barcelona have conquered the summer music scene – and are now going head-to-head

Since decades, SPAIN has dominated the war of summer festivals.

The biggest battle this year will be between the cities that take the Limp Bizkit.

Madrid and Barcelona are the two biggest summer music festivals, attracting huge crowds.

Barcelona fires first with Primavera Sound (June 1 – 7), a global tastemaker with beachside swagger.

The Cure, Gorillaz, Massive Attack, The xx and Bad Gyal are among the best British bands, and also included in the lineup is Wet Leg, Bad Gyal, and The xx.

Primavera sound’s 2026 full lineup, as seen on social media.

The CCCB hosts free daytime performances and a week-long party at venues such as Razzmatazz Parc del Forum, the Sala Apolo and other iconic venues.

Tickets weigh in at €350 for the full week or €125 per day, but Primavera’s genre-bending cool, international pull and city-wide footprint remain unmatched.

Next up, Madrid counters with the Mad Cool Festival (July 8 – 11), celebrating its tenth anniversary in serious style.

Mad Cool’s social media shared the Madrid summer festival line-up for July.

Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Florence + The Machine and Pixies are among the indie royalty, including Nick Cave. Pulp, Moby, David Byrne and David Byrne.

Mad Cool is a festival of scale, with over 70 artists across four carefully curated events.

Tickets start at €95 for a day or €240 for the full four-days, making it one of Europe’s best-value major festivals.

Mad Cool Talent is a platform for emerging Spanish artists, such as Malaga’s Break The Senses. Villaverde Reloaded transforms the neighbourhood around it into a living artwork.

Barcelona or Madrid, then? Spain is the summer destination for music lovers.
