Cost of registration for an electric scooter

Costs of registration for an electric scooter are relatively low.

The DGT fee is €8.67, which covers the administrative process of adding the vehicle to the new Personal Mobility Vehicle Register.

The scooter will receive an official identification number as well as a digital certification confirming the vehicle’s registration in the system. This certificate is likely to become more important as Spain prepares for the introduction of mandatory liability insurance on electric scooters.

Registration can be done online via the DGT Website or in person, at a provincial office of traffic.

It is interesting to note that minors can also register scooters in their names, but they must have a parent/legal guardian complete the registration form.

Register your scooter online

The DGT’s website is the fastest way for most people to register their scooter.

The process starts by logging in using Cl@ve Móvil, a digital certificate, electronic ID (DNIe), or Cl@ve Permanente. Users are then asked for basic contact details including a phone number and email address where confirmation will be sent.

The next step is to provide the vehicle details. The rider must either enter the certification number or choose the model and brand from the list of personal mobility vehicles. It is also necessary to enter the serial number for the scooter, which you can find on the vehicle or in the documentation.

The system will also ask how the scooter is used – private use or shared mobility services.

The final step is to upload either the technical sheet or a photo clearly showing the identification plate.

The scooter registration fee

Once the application is submitted and the €8.67 fee is paid, the system generates a digital registration certificate.

This document confirms the scooter’s official registration and contains the owner’s information, technical details about the vehicle, and a unique identification code.

The authorities say that the new registry helps them to identify vehicles easier and will improve enforcement of traffic regulations, especially since electric scooters are continuing to grow in popularity throughout Spain.

With millions already on the road – and more appearing every year – the DGT hopes the system will help bring greater safety and accountability to urban mobility.
