Elon Musk The tech world is once again in a frenzy, and this time, he has issued a warning to programmers. By the year 2026, the way we write code today may be obsolete. During internal meetings at xAI, and at the World Economic Forum at Davos the Tesla and SpaceX chief said artificial intelligence has advanced so rapidly that developers might soon stop typing code.
Instead, he argues, people will simply describe what they want in everyday language – and AI will build the software for them.
This is a bold claim, particularly at a moment when software developers are still among the most in-demand professionals worldwide.
Why Musk believes AI will replace coders
Musk’s arguments are not new. AI tools already help developers write code faster. Platforms such as GitHub Copilot generate entire functions and suggest improvements. They can also flag errors.
Musk’s warm-up is not the final act.
He believes we are approaching a turning point where AI systems won’t just assist programmers – they will take over most of the technical work. Developers would describe a project using plain English, rather than write lines of Python or Java: “Build an CRM with these features”, or “Create game with these rules”. The system will then produce a final, executable product.
According to him, future AI models may even bypass traditional programming languages and produce fully optimized software directly.
Watching is not only for programmers
Musk’s comments didn’t just stop at coding. He suggested that many digital roles could be affected first – from administrative jobs to basic data analysis and customer support functions.
He said he has previously stated that AI is increasingly capable to analyse medical records and draft complex legal documents. It challenges the idea that digital jobs that are routine are at risk.
He believes that roles that require physical work may be safer for longer. He also points out that humanoid robots, such as Tesla’s Optimus Project, could be future disruptors of factories and other industries.
Prediction, hype – or a real shift?
Not everyone in tech agrees that coding will “disappear”. Many experts believe that coding is evolving, not dying. AI can perform repetitive tasks, however, human oversight, problem-solving and design thinking are still necessary.
For now, demand for skilled developers remains strong. Musk’s comments reflect a growing concern in many industries: what will happen if AI continues to improve at the current rate?
We’ll have to wait and see if 2026 is the year that coding forever changes. What is certain is that artificial intelligence is no longer just a support tool in the tech world – it is fast becoming the main actor.
