Torremolinos hosts a number of art exhibitions, including photography, sculpture, and brotherhood imagery, throughout the months of March and April. These events are held in preparation for the Holy Week festivities. Different cultural spaces will host collections of artistic works inspired by imagery, symbolism, and emotion surrounding Easter. The initiative, according to the town hall, is “a creative perspective that transforms the spiritual and cultural into contemporary art”.

Rastro y Ruido, by Malaga artist Lazarus can be viewed in the visitor center (Cuesta del Tajo), until 17 April. Artist Lazarus mixes familiar images and everyday scenes to portray the theme of Holy Week.

Lazarus’ work will be on display in a new exhibition at Casa de Cultura, from 10 March through 10 April. White Light, White Heat consists of 14 pieces that explore the relationship between David Bowie and constructivism, religious brotherhoods and sacred elements. Each work has a QR code which directs the viewer to the music associated with it.

The photographer, known for his Semana Santa-related work in the province, has adopted the pseudonym Lazarus, as a tribute Bowie, his greatest influence. Blackstar was the last album of Bowie, and it had a profound effect on the artist. It inspired him to find his own creative path. He says that he “translated farewell into artwork”.

Spirituality in the 21st Century

Meanwhile Casa de los Navajas, is hosting the exhibition Cultología until 19 April, a collection of sculptures and paintings by the Sevillian artist Rafael Laureano. Each work is accompanied by an accompanying poem that explores themes like contemporary spirituality and identity, as well as the symbolic reinterpretation cultural heritage.

The visual artist, who graduated with a degree in Fine Art in 2013, is a member of the University of Seville’s art research group.

Finally, from 13 March to 30 April, the first floor of the town hall will host an exhibition of sculptures and imagery by Malaga artists Raúl Trillo and Salvador Lamas. Trillo, a sculptor, and Lamas, a woodcarver and a goldsmith (both members of the Archconfraternity of the Passion), were both introduced to the world of brotherhood workmanship by their membership in the Archconfraternity of the Passion.

This exhibition presents various images and sculptures relating to Holy Week. They include, for example, drawings of the of floats which are used to carry religious images to Easter, designs of altarpieces such as Our Lady of Carmen of La Carihuela or a bust of St John modeled in fired ceramic.
