Marbella storm response: 104 successful interventions

Marbella was recently hit by severe weather for five days in a row, which prompted extensive emergency operations. Firefighters performed 104 interventions and ensured that residents were not injured. Councillor José Eduardo Díaz, responsible for Public Safety, described the municipal teams’ response as “intense operational activity” during the prolonged storms.

Municipal Emergency Plan is fully operational

Marbella’s Municipal Emergency Plan was in place throughout this period. The Local Coordination Centre conducted regular meetings in order to effectively manage resources. Firefighters concentrated their efforts on clearing debris, fallen trees and unstable buildings. They also attended isolated land slides, keeping roads and reducing hazards from high winds and rain.

Civil Protection volunteers play key role

More than 450 volunteer hours were contributed by Civil Protection. The volunteers worked round the clock, monitoring waterways and traffic, as well as collaborating with other emergency services. Social operations included assisting vulnerable residents. One family only required temporary relocation.

Coordination of regional authorities

The municipal response was closely synchronized with the 112 emergency services and neighboring authorities. The risks were minimised by taking preventive measures such as shutting down facilities and stopping public events. Marbella supported towns nearby, including 11 interventions outside of the city, and an operation in El Secadero (Casares) where the diving team performed a long-term task recognized by other emergency teams.

Recovery and damage assessments underway

After the emergency phase, the council began assessing damage to roads, infrastructure, green spaces, and beaches. In order to quickly restore public areas, a recovery plan is being developed. Díaz praised residents for acting responsibly, highlighting that careful preparation and coordinated action limited the storm’s impact.

Marbella’s response is a good example of how local emergency planning works and the commitment of professional and voluntary teams. Authorities continue to monitor the recovery effort to ensure affected regions return to normality as soon as possible.
