Costa Del Sol Hit by Earthquakes and 100mm of Rain

Storm Leonardo hit the Costa Del Sol, causing reservoirs to burst. Yesterday, three small earthquakes were felt in Casares.  So far, Malaga has recorded 160mm of rain.

Three earthquakes are felt in Gaucín, in the Serranía de Ronda yesterday (4th February).  The first occurred at 2.34pm and measured 2.4 on Richter’s scale.  The second earthquake was 2.5 at 4.50pm and the third measured 2.3 at 4:55pm.  The Mayor confirmed there were no reported injuries, and said he had been informed that the tremors are caused by underground water moving after the torrential rainfall.

Casares: 1500 people cut off

In Casares, 1500 people are completely cut off. Due to severe weather caused by Storm Leonardo.  The Guadiaro has flooded its banks and forced the closure of A1202, the town’s main street.  There is no internet or mobile reception for residents due to the power cut.  Twenty people were evacuated from their home in El SecaderoThey are currently being housed at the Ochomin hostel.

Reservoirs Letting Water Into Rivers

The dams are at Casasola Almogia La Concepcion near Istan Conde del Guadalhorce All the water valves in Ardales are now open for controlled release.

The reservoir at El Limonero It has also exceeded its capacity. The floodgates were opened to relieve the pressure on reservoir.  Overflows are being directed into the Guadalmedina River.   El Limonero This river is primarily used to control the flow of water and protect local areas from flooding.

Yellow Weather Warning

Yellow weather warning in effect until 6pm today. On Friday, the forecast calls for heavy rains on the Costa Del Sol. A new yellow warning is in effect for torrential rainfall and gale-force winds on Saturday.  Click here to view the full forecast.
