Eco Amigos & Mil Playas join forces for the latest Costa del Sol beach cleanup campaign

Eco Amigos has had to delay several of their beach cleaning campaigns along the Western Costa del Sol because of recent severe weather conditions in southern Spain. Melissa Vaughn is leading a group of volunteers who are getting ready to participate in a fun collaborative event on the Western Costa del Sol this weekend.

Eco Amigos and the “Mil Playas”, a famous travelling beach cleaning project, plan to work together on Saturday, February 7 for a joint effort of beach cleaning. Mil PlayasThe initiative, which is a grassroots effort to clean and walk along stretches of Spain’s coast, moves from beach-to-beach to collect litter, to raise awareness about pollution in the ocean, and to inspire local involvement in environmental protection. The project is based on hands-on actions, often in partnership with local groups. This allows for a greater impact and covers hard-to reach coastal areas using local knowledge. The event will take place at La Duquesa Beach, pending weather reports.

Local expertise meets national campaign

The meet-up promises to combine Eco Amigos‘ local knowledge of the Western Costa del Sol’s popular yet vulnerable beaches with Mil Playas‘ mobile, expedition-style approach. Both teams will use volunteers to tackle debris, including plastics, fishing gear, and micro-waste. They will also educate participants about sustainable practices and how important it is to preserve the Mediterranean coastline.

The event is open for the public and all safety gear (gloves, bags, etc.) will be provided. Participants are encouraged wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes and bring sunscreen. They should also bring water and enthusiasm. Eco Amigos will share the details of the meeting, including the exact time and location, on their social media channels as we get closer to the event. The activity this weekend shows the increasing momentum for community-driven conservation. It also proves that, even with unpredictable weather, collective actions can protect Spain’s beautiful beachfronts for future generations.
