Since its inception in 2018, the’special security’ plan for Campo de Gibraltar aimed to combat drug trafficking has been involved in over 37.470 operations. The arrests of over 30,400 people, the seizure and destruction of 2,210 tons of drugs as well as 10,000 vehicles (including those for sea or air) have been the result of this plan.
These were the headline figures presented on Monday by the Spanish government’s delegate for Andalucía, Pedro Fernández. He praised Spain’s police and security force working in the region for their excellent efforts and effectiveness to curb drugs bound for Europe that enter along the coast of the region.
Fernández also provided details of the latest operation carried out by the National Police in the area, known as ‘Sombra Negra’ (black shadow), in which a criminal organisation responsible for smuggling cocaine along the Andalusian coast was dismantled.
The delegate from the government said that “this new strike against drug trafficking resulted in 105 arrests from a network of criminals responsible for the bringing of 57,000 kilos cocaine into Europe. They operated from the provinces Malaga, Almeria and Cadiz”.
According to him “the operation was the result of more that a year’s investigation and rigorous and ongoing work in the area. It represents a very strong, very direct action, with a positive result, against the largest money-laundering and distribution centre in Campo de Gibraltar”.
