BYD offers full electric and hybrid cars with small city cars and full-size vehicles, as well as SUVs, estate cars and SUVs. The SEALION is the latest (yes, really!) The 5 DM i is a SUV that features a plug-in-hybrid combination, with a 1.5 litre petrol motor assisting the electric engine when necessary. It offers a more EV-like driving experience, but with the versatility of a gasoline car.

The build quality of BYD’s models is the same across the board. The pricing makes it feel like a more premium vehicle than some of its European counterparts with similar, and sometimes higher, prices.

Two versions are on offer – Comfort at €34,461/£29,995 and Design at €37,908/£32,995 – with standard equipment on both including power folding and heated door mirrors, auto wipers and lights, power front seats, rear parking sensors and camera along with navigation and wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The Design version adds a powered tailgate, heated seat, wireless phone charger, 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, and a 360 degree camera.

It’s a smooth, refined ride with the occasional engine noise when you accelerate. The interior is spacious and offers plenty of room for your collectibles. It has a flat interior floor, which is particularly useful when you remove the rear seats.

The background color is not very clear, as is the case with the main screen.

The driver annoyance systems (assistance systems) in modern cars can be silenced, though they are not too intrusive on BYDs with one exception. The car will warn you if you even slightly divert your attention for a second.

It’s a great car but it lacks character. What modern cars and EVs have that? Few! BYD aims to offer comfortable, affordable transport that is practical, well equipped, and stylish depending on the person. All of these are done very well.
