WATCH: ‘Stay in doors!’ Storm Joseph sends chairs and tables flying across Gibraltar and Southern Spain

The terrace furniture was hurled from a Gibraltar high-rise today by Hurricane Joseph, which pounded the area.

Video taken by local resident Denny Victor reveals tables and chairs falling 60 meters from the balcony of the Eurocity luxury residential complex.

The heavy furniture was thrown violently into the street below. Fortunately, no pedestrians were nearby and no injuries were reported.

The incident happened this morning, as the Rock is under a Severe Weather Warning. In exposed areas, gusts can reach up to 60 knots (110km/h).

The chaotic weather has forced the Royal Gibraltar Police to close Hardings Way near the university due to loose structures and dangerous debris, while the government has issued a ‘stay at home’ warning.

The traffic was diverted on the Edinburgh Estate as well after the Bishop Canilla House began to fall apart and parts started to fall onto the street.

The storm in Spain has effectively closed the Strait of Gibraltar.

Since 5.00am, all ferry crossings between Algeciras and Tarifa have been cancelled.

Heavy goods vehicles are not allowed to enter the port of Algeciras since yesterday night because the waiting area is completely full.

The port authorities ordered all ships in the bay to leave the harbor to avoid the storm.

Aemet issued an Orange alert today for coastal risks, and a Yellow alert for wind and rainfall. However, the schools in Campo de Gibraltar remain open.

Parents are furious about the decision, as they face a chaotic morning of avoiding fallen branches and overturned garbage cans.

Many have pointed out the fact that classes will be suspended in November 2020 due to less severe conditions.

Andalucia’s emergency services have warned residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.

Forecasts indicate that the worst wind is expected between 10.00am-1.00pm. Heavy rains of up to fifty millimetres are predicted to fall over the next 24-hour period.
