After heavy rains on Saturday night, 24th January, a section of a wall in Granada’s Alhambra Palace collapsed.

No injuries were reported as the incident took place when the monument was closed.

The collapsed section along the Paseo de las Torres was not originally part of a Moorish structure.

Built in the mid-20th Century, the wall did not have proper drainage, which caused the materials to deteriorate when the rains came.

Rodrigo Ruiz-Jiménez, director of the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife, confirmed that the foundation will now inspect all walls with similar characteristics.

In the Alhambra, when something breaks, it’s changed. It is constant work that is never finished,” Ruiz-Jiménez said. He said that the wall would be rebuilt to its former state. In the interim, the area was cordoned off. Visitors routes were also slightly redirected.

New Technology for Conservation Architect Antonio Peral and curator of the Generalife noted that a conservation project was already underway, in collaboration with the University, to reinforce the Generalife wall. This initiative will concentrate on the terraced (paratas), walls of the Huerta Grande.

Peral stated that “the best technology available will be used including georadar to penetrate the wall and detect cracks, other imperfections, and defects.”
