Marbella helps hundreds with food banks grant

Marbella Town Hall has granted €12,000 to the Agrupación de Cofradías de Semana Santa to support the operation of Cáritas’ community food store, a vital lifeline for families facing financial hardship.

The money will cover the store’s operating costs, allowing it to continue to provide essential food supplies for those in need. The grant forms part of the council’s commitment to supporting social projects which address local needs throughout the year.

A lifeline for hundreds

The food store provides basic items like milk, rice and pasta, beans, tinned tuna, cooking oil and hygiene products to around 400 people.

The service was initially launched with 1,000 users, thanks to the FEAD Plan via the local foodbank. Now, it relies on donations made by the foodbank, Passion Brotherhoods contributions, private donations and a municipal food fund. The service ensures that families in need continue to get the essentials they need, even without any national support.

Families receive not only food but also advice on nutrition and household management to improve their overall wellbeing.

Community-driven support

Councillor José Eduardo Díaz highlighted the crucial role of the cofradías, stating that they not only preserve Marbella’s cultural and religious heritage but also demonstrate outstanding social responsibility. The store is managed by volunteers who are mainly linked to parishes in the area. Each year they distribute about 50,000 kilos, organize seasonal initiatives like Christmas toy distributions and customize supplies according to family needs.

Continued commitment

“The council will continue to back projects that reach those most in need,” said Díaz. This partnership between local authorities and social and religious groups highlights the strength and solidarity of Marbella’s community. The initiative is an example of collaboration that ensures practical and dignity support for families in need, promotes social cohesion, reinforces the city’s reputation, and strengthens its compassion and community focus.
