The National Police has taken action to combat the theft of V-16 emergency beacons. Nearly a dozen vehicles parked in La Victoria, a private garage located in Malaga city were discovered to have been broken into about a week earlier. This type of crime is already being investigated by the police.

In Granada public concern led to the creation of several sting operations, resulting 12 arrests and identifying around 20 people. As a response to this issue, the National Police Force is offering a number of recommendations to the public that will help them to prevent thefts.

The IMEI code of the V-16 is printed on its box or base. It is a code of 15 digits that can be found on the actual geolocation device. This code is typically printed at the bottom, on one side or even on the box. In the event that it’s stolen, the victims can give this code to police when they file a report.

The law enforcement will be able to track stolen devices back to their owners by using the geolocation data obtained through courts. This strategy is designed to combat the growing black market in V-16 beacons.

According to Granada’s Provincial Headquarters for the National Police (Granada’s National Police), those arrested for these crimes are usually men who are addicted narcotics, mainly heroin. They are looking for a fast fix of cash so they can buy their next dosage. They are usually repeat offenders who damage several cars in one single incident.
