TRAVEL: All high-speed trains cancelled between Madrid and Andalucia after deadly Cordoba crash

Travel: All high speed trains between Madrid and Andalucia cancelled after fatal Cordoba accident

Spain’s national railway network operator confirmed that all high-speed trains between Madrid and Cordoba and Sevilla, Malaga, and Huelva will be suspended from Monday, January 19th, until further notice.

Two high-speed trains derailed in southern Spain, causing at least 39 deaths and more than 150 injuries.

Adif confirmed the cancellation of all services on Monday following the collision at Adamuz near Cordoba between two trains that has resulted in at least 39 deaths and dozens of injuries.

Renfe, which operates the AVE service between Madrid and Andalucia and the ALVIA train which was involved in Sunday’s collision, is offering free cancellations and changes on all suspended trains.

At 7.45pm Sunday, three carriages from an Iryo travelling from Malaga and Madrid derailled and crossed over onto the next track, where they collided into an Alvia heading from Madrid to Huelva.

In an interview with Cadena Sur on Monday morning, the president of Renfe, Álvaro Fernández Heredia, suggested the routes could be closed for several days.

Iryo is the low cost train company run by Italians. They have set up an emergency helpline to assist those affected.

Ouigo said that its website and APP allow all travellers to make changes or cancel their tickets for free.

A cause-finding investigation was launched to find out what caused the crash. It is the deadliest accident in Spain since the derailment near Santiago de Compostela, in July 2013.

Oscar Puente, Spain’s Transport Minister described the accident in a strange way. Initial reports claim that the derailed, less than four-year-old train underwent a complete service last week, and the track on which the accident took occurred was overhauled in the past year.

He said, “It seems strange, very bizarre, and very difficult to understand right now”.
