Andalucía has seen a tragic start to 2026 in its gender-based violence statistics. The Ministry of Equality has confirmed that a woman aged 58 was murdered in Olvera (in the province of Cadiz) on Monday 12th January.

The Guardia Civil has arrested her 60-year old husband as a suspect. On Tuesday, he was brought to court.

The crime occurred in the home of the couple. According to sources the victim never reported her husband’s violent behaviour.

Olvera’s town hall condemned this crime based on gender and declared it a day of mourning.

Juanma Moreno, the president of the Andalusian Regional Government, also condemned the incident and expressed her support for the family of the victim. He called on the politicisation of the case to be removed and for unity when it comes to gender-based abuse.

The government delegate in Andalucía, Pedro Fernández, called for “institutional involvement to articulate an effective response to this scourge”.
