Almuñecar is warming up and doing its stretches for the 16th year of the San Silvestre Sexitana, the hugely popular festive fun run on Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, in aid of the local branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
This non-competitive Christmas tradition in Costa Tropical is open to all age groups, both children and adults. Some will run the race while others will jog the route and stop at bars along the way. The focus is on community and enjoying the company of your neighbours.
Organisers say that it grows in size every year. They emphasize the joyous, fun atmosphere by encouraging runners to dress up for extra fun. The day kicks off with a community gathering in Plaza de la Constitución from 4pm, featuring snacks and traditional buñuelos cakes, hot chocolate, and assorted sweets.
The race starts at the same place, with the children starting at 7pm and the adults at 7.30pm. The 3.5-kilometre route is suitable for families and covers the whole town.
Prizes for the best fancy dress costumes
The most creative costumes will receive prizes, while local businesses are donating raffle items such as hams, espresso machines, and more. The organizers hope to surpass previous participation numbers and stress that all contributions, no matter what size, support vital cancer research.
The event will be supported by the Sexitano Athletics Club, the Council of local businesses and community groups.
