The love of motorcycles in Spain has never been greater. Carfax’s recent study sheds light on the growing motorcycle industry, with both sales and usage experiencing significant growth. They found that, based on a study of more than 3.7 million motorcycles now in circulation, the market for two wheels will experience a 10% growth in 2024. This is their biggest increase since 2008.

In addition, the study found that the average motorcycle age has risen to 12 years. In addition, 44% of the motorcycles are older than 15 years.

Like anything else, older vehicles have their pros and cons. In terms of the environment, older vehicles are less equipped with modern emission equipment and emit higher levels pollutants. It is important to acknowledge the value of the second hand market, which reduces the need for new manufacturing. According to Carfax, 49% motorcycles have two or more previous owners. Second-hand vehicles are a great way for people to save money.

The average mileage of a motorcycle varies based on its origin. For imported bikes, it is 41,000km, while for motorcycles in the rental fleet, the average is only 31,000km.

Geographically, motorcycles are more concentrated in urban areas. Motorcyles are a better mode of transportation in large cities due to the high traffic volume, narrow streets, and lack of parking. Barcelona is the largest city in terms of fleet size, with 17%, Madrid 11%, and Malaga 5%. The majority of motorcycles are petrol-powered, with electric models being scarce. They represent only 1%, which indicates that the transition towards electrification has just begun.

Spain’s aging motorcycle fleet reflects both the durability of the vehicles as well as the strength of the market. The growing popularity of motorcycling offers new opportunities. However, riders and buyers must also consider the challenges that older motorcycles present. To ensure safety, reliability and long-term pleasure on the road, it is important to have detailed vehicle histories, records of maintenance and thorough inspections. Carfax’s reports are a valuable tool in navigating the dynamic, ever-changing market.
