Three injured in restaurant fire raises questions about staff training at Marbella shopping centre

Marbella Shopping Centre staff training raised in light of three injured people following a restaurant fire

Three people, including a 16-year-old minor, were hospitalised for smoke inhalation following a fire that broke out in the kitchen of a restaurant located in the La Cañada shopping centre on the A-7 motorway in Marbella on Monday evening, December 8.

Around 7.15pm, emergency services were notified after several calls reported an apparent fire in the kitchen. There was also a possibility of injuries. Andalucian Emergency Service (112) mobilized Marbella Firefighters, National Police and Local Police as well as the 061 Emergency Health Centre.

According to health sourcesThe three individuals, a teenager and two women aged 51 and 52, were treated on the spot before being transported to Hospital Costa del Sol. The official reports refer to smoke intoxication but the witness account is more dramatic.

Eye witnesses describe the scene

A waiter described the chaos to an eyewitness: “I spoke with a waiter and he said that a temp of Lizarran who was eating noticed that the oil on a pan had caught fire, and quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher to try to put it out. But the fire got worse and so he burned his arms and the cook also got burnt. Both were taken to hospital by ambulance.” The two men were taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Emergency teams acted quickly to stop the fire spreading, but the extent of the damage is still unknown. The cause of the fire has not been revealed by authorities, but hot oil kitchen fires are common in busy restaurants.

This incident is a warning to those who would try to put out oil-based fires using standard extinguishers. These can spread the flames instead of stopping them. The incident calls into question whether large chains provide adequate training to their employees before they allow them to operate potentially harmful equipment. After the initial response, no further injuries were reported and the shopping center was secured.
