Mijas Pueblo charity Christmas tree route for Cáritas

Mijas Pueblo has officially begun the festive season by celebrating the 10th year of its popular “Ruta de los Árboles Solidarios” (Route of the Charity Christmas Trees). Twenty-five uniquely decorated trees, five more than last year, now line the historic centre from Plaza Virgen de la Peña to Plaza de los Siete Caños, turning the narrow streets into an open-air gallery celebrating local creativity and goodwill.

The initiative, organised by the local branch of Cáritas, invites everyone to stroll the route, admire the handmade decorations and vote for their favourite Christmas tree using a special charity leaflet (tríptico solidario). All proceeds from the leaflets go directly to Cáritas to support its charitable work in the community.

The tradition of a ten-year-old event is still growing

At the opening, the ten-year anniversary was described as “a decade filled with participation, excitement and charitable acts that make Mijas an unique place to celebrate Christmas.” The visitors were invited to “come, enjoy the light, walk every street and discover the creations that represent so many locals’ personal efforts.”

María Jesús Moreno, a long-standing Cáritas volunteer, highlighted the project’s community spirit: “For ten years we’ve been making and displaying the charity trees. The goal is to decorate and raise money for the charity by distributing leaflets. “Schoolchildren, secondary students, families, and neighbors all contribute to creating their own tree.”

Volunteers insist that “Mijas’ imagination never runs out.” Anyone wishing to take part in the 2026 edition simply needs to contact Cáritas when next year’s call for participants is announced.

A commemorative plaque will be presented to the tree with the most votes. Those who return a voting leaflet in its entirety will also enter a draw for prizes donated by local businesses.

The Ruta de los Árboles Solidarios will remain open daily until January 11, now that the Christmas tree competition has become a firm and regular favourite of the Mijas festive tradition.
