Cheese fair to bring the finest flavours, and most interesting scents, to Estepona

Estepona will be the place to experience the most delicious cheeses and interesting aromas.

For those who don’t like cheese, this is for you. From December 12 to 14, the picturesque Paseíllo on Calle Real will once again become a fragrant paradise for food lovers as the town hosts the eleventh edition of the Feria del Queso ‘Popi’ Sabor a Malaga.

Organised by Estepona Town Hall in partnership with celebrated professional ham cutter José María Téllez, better known as ‘Popi’, and supported wholeheartedly by the Diputación de Malaga through its prestigious ‘Sabor a MalagaThe Costa del Sol has become a favourite for gastronomic celebrations.

Malaga is a bustling cheesy food market.

The three-day festival, which is open daily from 12pm until 10pm and offers free admission, transforms the pedestrian centre of Estepona in a vibrant outdoor market. Over thirty producers (80% of whom are from Malaga) will present an incredible range of artisan dairy products and cheeses, from rich aged cow’s-milk wheels to silky fresh goat milk rounds. It might look cheap, but it’s no bargain, with a “ración” of sliced cheese usually selling at €5 a dish. If you choose carefully, you might discover some new delights. There are many cheeses that are free to try, and they are all worth it.

But cheese is not the only attraction. Stalls will overflow with complementary gourmet treasures: extra-virgin olive oils, marinated olives and pickles, silky pâtés, crunchy nuts and carefully selected regional wines, making the fair a complete gourmet market for the palate under the wintery Andalusian sun. Many visitors use the fair to purchase luxurious local Christmas gifts, or to build impressive holiday cheeseboards. In many cases, purchasing by the gram is more affordable than the options on offer. Ask for the best deal on your favourite cheese.

The earliest days of the Popi Cheese Fair has grown into a powerful platform for the ‘Sabor a Malaga’ seal, reinforcing the province’s reputation for outstanding produce while giving Estepona valuable international visibility.

If you are a cheese lover or just looking for an enjoyable, cheesy outing in the run up to Christmas, then the 11th Feria del Queso Popi will offer delicious discoveries, warm Andalusian welcome and the opportunity to take a small piece of Malaga’s culinary heart home.
