Let’s be honest – for many travellers, the most stressful part of flying isn’t turbulence or delays. The fear of missing out on something crucial, such as the check-in counter, the boarding announcement, or the gate, is what makes flying so stressful. Google has listened to the collective fear and is rolling out a minor update to Google Wallet which could make airport life a bit easier.

The digital wallet application introduces a feature that allows users receive location-based notifications linked to their boarding pass, ensuring important reminders are displayed exactly where and when needed.

Smart alerts to know your location

The concept behind this update is refreshingly simple. The boarding pass will open automatically when the inside is opened. Google Wallet, travellers are now prompted to activate ‘proximity notifications.’

Once switched on, the app can send alerts based not only on time but on physical location – particularly when users are near the airport. This means that reminders will appear as you approach the terminal or move through the departure area.

These notifications will give you timely information about your flight. For example, they may include check-in alerts and other helpful prompts. This helps ensure that nothing gets missed during the often hectic hours leading up to departure.

You can even set up each boarding card separately. You can set up notifications separately for each leg of your journey if you keep a connection or return flight in your wallet.

If you are a frequent flyer or navigate unfamiliar airports this will mean less time spent scrolling through confirmation apps or emails while juggling your luggage and passport.

You can save on more than just plane tickets

Although the first application of this feature was for air travel, its use could soon extend to many other places. According to information shared on 9to5GoogleThis proximity alert system could eventually be applied to other passes in Google Wallet.

This could include:

  • Shoppers loyalty cards
  • Tickets for concerts or events
  • Admission tickets for leisure or attractions

Your phone might eventually remind you that you still have a waiting ticket for a particular venue, or that you don’t use your loyalty card when you’re near your favorite store.

The goal is to make Google Wallet less of a static folder for digital documents and more of a quiet assistant that reacts to where you are, helping you make use of things you already own – without having to think about it.

A travel shift is part of an overall trip

Google is also working on a system that will allow users to track their travels without having to open the app. The company is reportedly working on a notification-based journey tracking system that would deliver travel updates directly to a user’s device – without even needing to open the app.

This could be a practical way to receive important travel information at the right time, rather than constantly checking screens and manually searching for boarding schedules.

It’s all part of a broader push toward making smartphones less distracting while still staying useful – providing information when it’s needed, rather than demanding attention at every turn.

What could make a real difference?

This update may seem like a minor tweak, but it addresses one of the biggest pre-flight concerns: the fear that you will miss important steps.

Even experienced travellers can feel uncomfortable when flying due to the crowded terminals and unfamiliar layouts. Location-aware reminders can help reduce the tension in the background. They act as a safety net.

This update is a great way to offer extra peace of mind for expats traveling between countries or holidaymakers who are navigating busy airports.

Google Wallet is beginning to include the feature in its updates. Once a wider test is completed, it is expected that this feature will be expanded.

In short, your boarding pass is becoming more than just a digital ticket – it’s starting to work like a practical travel companion, helping keep your journey on track without adding more screen time to an already hectic day.
