Clarence Jazz Club celebrates its 12th Anniversary in a spectacular way on Saturday, 22nd February with a concert featuring one of the most sought after voices in contemporary Jazz: Singer and trumpeter Andrea Motis.
Barcelona’s prodigy, Motis, is just 30 years of age and has already achieved a remarkable career. Motis was discovered at the age of 12 by Joan Chamorro, a bassist and jazz educator in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. She quickly caught the attention the jazz community. Quincy Jones invited the teenager trumpeter to his Global Gumbo All-Stars, in 2011. He famously declared that she sang and played like Billie Holiday, while playing alto saxophone similar to Johnny Hodges.
The global star is on the rise
Motis, the first Catalan recording artist, has since released ten albums in her own name. label – the historic home of John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Her 2017 album Emotional dance She made her debut as composer and established her as an international superstar. She has shared the stage with Milton Nascimento as well Omara Portuondo and Esperanza spalding. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma invited her to do a haunting rendition of the Catalan Folk Song “El cant des ocells”. For this very special anniversary night, Motis will perform in an intimate duo format alongside acclaimed Brazilian guitarist Jurandir Dã Silva. A unique stylist who blends MPB, Afro-Bahian rhythms and jazz, Dã Silva has collaborated with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Toninho Horta and Fatoumata Diawara and won multiple awards in his native Brazil for his innovative percussive guitar technique. The evening will include the annual presentation of the Clarence Jazz Club Award The event was a celebration of jazz, with gifts and surprises to all attendees.
