BENIDORM has prepared for a surge in winter visitors as Brits flock the Costa Blanca over the festive season.
With Benidorm’s festivities attracting more tourists every year, the location is awaiting the arrival of Spaniards over the upcoming bank holiday weekend – they will then be followed by Brits during Christmas and New Year.
‘It’s wrong to think that the British only come when the weather is good,’ says tourist expert and founder of Benidormforever, Michelle Baker.

Last month, an influx from Brits flooded the streets of London for a Fancy Dress Festival. Tourists dressed in various costumes and paraded through the streets.
Baker anticipates that Brits who have finished their schooling in the UK will begin arriving at Benidorm on December 20.
‘They come for Christmas and at New Year there is a party on the beach that they love,’ she says.
In the final weeks, tourists still sit on their terraces despite the cold and the wind.
Describing the cultural difference between Britain and Spain, Baker said that ‘lots of British are nomads’ because they move house frequently.

She says that in Spain many people live in the same town their entire lives, whereas in England, they can move around and end up being far from their family during Christmas.
Many older Brits who have moved away from their children travel to Benidorm, where they find company at its hotels that transform into vibrant communities.
Travellers find new friends in the twinkling lights, sparkling decorations and festive atmosphere.
‘There is nothing sadder than being alone at Christmas,’ Baker says.
She continued to say that the festive season is not just about those who are in charge of advertising on billboards, televisions screens and street lights.

This loneliness ‘weights’ on those who ultimately journey to Benidorm to spend Christmas with others.
Tourists can also experience a Spanish Christmas where Christmas Eve is as important as Christmas Day and New Year’s is celebrated by drinking grapes instead of champagne.
‘Each time that they discover Benidorm they want to return,’ says Baker about the Brits.
