Spain dishes out fresh travel advice for those visiting the UK as major visa overhaul comes into effect next year

Spain gives new travel tips for UK visitors as major visa changes are implemented next year

SPAIN’S foreign office has published fresh advice for those wanting to visit the UK from next year – with big changes to how visas work looming on the horizon.

Spanish nationals, who don’t have a UK residence permit or visa and want to visit the UK in February next year, will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation.

The ETA has been in place since April this year – but authorities are tightening the rules and airlines will no longer allow travellers on board unless an application has been given the green light.

Spanish nationals travelling to the UK for a short time for family, business or tourism must obtain the authorisation.

The UK Border Control also requires it.

It will not permit Spaniards who want to study or work in the UK to do so without a visa.

Travellers are advised to apply for visas at least 3 working days prior to their trip.

The majority of applications are approved within minutes. However, some cases may require a more thorough review.

An application should be made on the UK government website and not through third party sources – with an ETA costing around €18.

The UK Government recommends British citizens with dual citizenship to make sure they have a British passport that is valid.

Those who have a legal residence in the UK are required to maintain a UKVI account with the most up-to date details including passport information.
