Tenerife South Airport in chaos as EES rolls out continues

EES continues to cause chaos at Spanish airports. At Tenerife South Airport, scenes of chaos have been spotted.

As the testing of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System for non-European Union travelers continues, there were long queues on Friday.

The long lines of passengers in the arrival areas frustrated passengers, who had to wait for hours to complete the biometric passport application.

The new EES rollout collects fingerprints, facial images, and passport information of travellers who are not members of the European Union – the aim is that it will gradually replace manual passport stamping.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior has stated that the system will be implemented in all of Spain by the 10th of next April.

In the meantime, automated checks will be run in parallel with the traditional system. This means that delays such as those at Tenerife South may continue for many months to come, particularly during peak periods.

Delays in Tenerife South are, however, not new – local authorities and tourists alike have repeatedly raised concerns about saturation in the airport’s arrival hall.

There have been reports of long waiting times, crowded halls and a packed passport-control area.
