New weather front will bring rain and warnings for strong winds and rough seas to southern Spain

Southern Spain is in for a rainy day and strong winds, as well as warnings of rough seas and wind.

The weather will change for the first week of December in the southern part of Spain. The passage of a front between Monday and Tuesday will leave, according to the state meteorological agency (Aemet), “some rainfall across large areas of Andalucía”. Aemet has also activated yellow alerts for the two days in the region, but only for high winds and rough seas. The warnings are set to go into effect between 10am and noon on Monday, and remain in force until 6am the next morning or 6pm Tuesday.

In the end, this is what the forecast predicts. Monday, 24 November “Light rain in the afternoon, with more intensity and likelihood in the mountains”, as well “very strong winds from the West in the Eastern third”. In fact, Aemet is going to activate yellow warnings, from 10am today (Monday), in Almeria, Granada and Jaén for maximum gusts of up to 70 or 80 km/h and three-metre-high waves.

Yellow warnings Wind will be active in the Almanzora valley and Los Vélez-Almería, Nacimiento area and Campo de Tabernas-Almería and, finally, in Poniente and Almeria city. The warning in Granada will cover Guadix, Baza, Alpujarras Granada as well as the Costa Tropical Coast of Granada. Finally, in the province of Jaén, westerly winds will affect Cazorla and Segura-Jaén. Warnings are also issued for coastal phenomena This year’s focus is on Poniente & Almeria city – Almeria coast, as well on the Costa Tropical in Granada.

For Tuesday, Aemet expects very strong westerly gusts in the eastern third of the Andalucía region during the early hours of the morning. In Almeria and Granada the yellow warnings for wind and waves will expire at 18.00 hours while in the province of Jaén the warning for strong gusts of wind will be deactivated at 6am.

Tuesday will see “cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, which is more intense in the Betic mountains, and clearings that tend to appear from midday”. The minimum temperatures are slightly different at the end the day. Maximum temperatures are slightly higher or lower in the western part of the country, and slightly higher in the rest.

“Persistent” rainfall

Aemet has forecast “persistent rain on the Cantabrian slope, Galicia and areas along the eastern Cantabrian Sea”. This rainfall may be heavy locally in these regions and the eastern Cantabrian Sea. The agency of state highlights the possibility of accumulations of persistent rainfall in the Central System, and Northern Iberian. The agency also mentions “a high concentration of calima in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and in the morning in Tenerife and Gran Canaria”. Aemet also forecasts an “unprecedented rise in minimum temperatures” in certain areas of the Southern Plateau, as well as locally along the Mediterranean Coast and Mallorca. Very strong gusts are likely on Ibiza, the southern and eastern Mediterranean façade, the Iberian and other mountain ranges of the Mediterranean arc”.

On Tuesday, there will be a continuation of persistent rain. “Locally heavy showers are likely to occur in the northern Navarre and eastern Cantabrian Sea which will lead to significant accumulations.” In the west Pyrenees, there may be snowfall. “Very strong gusts are likely in the lower Ebro, north of Castellón, in the eastern Baetic and surrounding areas and Ibiza. Aemet forecasts gusts up to 100 km/h in the morning south of Tarragona.
