According to the plans announced by the government this week, it will take just two hours to travel by train between Spain’s two largest cities.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente announced on Monday that the government would push ahead with plans to raise top speeds of AVE high-speed trains to 350km/h.
At the moment, trips between Spain and Catalonia take between 2 and a half to 3 hours. On certain rail stretches, speeds are limited to 310 km/h.
With rail infrastructure improvements, the 621km trip could be cut down to just under two hours without compromising on safety.
The Language of Speaking Europa PressPuente declared: “We will go on the offensive using high-speed rail.” Our goal is 350km/h and we will be the second country in the world to reach this speed – after China.

The Minister of Transport said the new aerodynamic rail support could reduce the aerodynamic load on the tracks by more than a fifth.
He said that the trains could travel up to 12 percent faster, without adding aerodynamic resistance.
Travellers in Andalucia can also rejoice after Puente announced plans to build a brand new AVE station at Parla, which is located about 20km south-east of Madrid.
The new station will enable commuters from Andalucia to Catalunya to travel without having the need to change trains right in the heart of Madrid.
