Terry McKinley has received the prestigious award for his work as the President of the Irish Association of Spain. “The association was awarded the “Outstanding Citizen of the year” award by Mayor Benalmadena. The ceremony at the Town Hall recognized individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the town. It brought together authorities, security forces and community groups.
Mr McKinley who has lived in Costa del Sol since 1986 expressed his joy at receiving the award. “He said that it was a great feeling, and that the award was a true testament to the Irish Association Spain’s work. The Irish Association was officially named by him, but he said that the mission of this organization is much wider. ““We are more of an expat association that will help wherever possible, regardless of passports.”
26 Years at the Costa del Sol, a half-life of quiet service
“I am very grateful to the expat community and I think that most people enjoy a happy and normal life in Spain. Sometimes people do have problems. That is when we are asked for help. The majority of our work goes unnoticed. People we assist don’t want their problems made public. You know who we are if you’ve ever dealt with The Irish Association. We are the ones who organize one of the largest parties on the Benalmadena Calendar if you have never dealt with us. It is Saint Patricks Day.”
While the association’s influence on international communities is often not seen, it was a major theme. Terry explained that most expats live a happy life but the association is there to help them in times of need. He explained that most of their work goes unnoticed because they respect people’s privacy. Many people associate the association with the huge St. Patrick’s Day event held in the town every year.
Be a Community and look out for Your Neighbours
Christmas is fast approaching. It’s a great time for some expats and a lonely one for others. Are you able to say anything about how important it is for everyone to look out for one another at this time of year?
“Action is the best way to solve a problem. Be a community.” Many excellent organisations are set up to assist. One in Particular, Age concern does excellent work in Benalmadena.”
Terry’s answer when asked what his proudest moment was was to receive this award. “You can‘He said, “It is hard to be recognized in the place you call your home.”
The association will continue to do its important community work in the future. Terry said that many volunteers are essential to this project. Other than the St. Patrick‘The next major event will be a fundraiser day for Fidelio Dogs Home, which will close after 35 years. This event is to cover outstanding operational and veterinary costs. The popular “Sur Pipes Band” led by Terry‘Leslie Thomson – a longtime friend of Leslie Thomson’s – will attend.
Terry and The Irish Association did the expats on the Costa del Sol, proud. It was well deserved. Keep up the great work.
