San Roque’s residents and visitors enjoyed a diverse line-up of events in this month. These included jazz, golf and a brand new family park. This highlights the vibrant culture and leisure scene.
San Roque jazz festival
Last weekend, the Juan Luis Galiardo Theatre in San Roque was filled with the sounds of the V Festival de Jazz.
Saturday’s show opened with the Andalucía Big Band and guest vocalist Deborah Carter, delivering a bold mix of classic big-band rhythm and modern flair that set the mood for a stylish night of live music. On Sunday the audience was treated with a performance by Alicia Tamariz Quad, whose mix of jazz piano and visuals projections created a warm atmosphere.
Organisers claim that San Roque has secured its place as a cultural hub with the festival’s fifth edition. Tickets were sold out quickly, and the packed auditoriums on both nights showed a growing local interest in jazz.
Ana Ruiz, Deputy Mayor of Gibraltar, highlighted the success and large attendance at the weekend. She said that the enthusiastic response of audiences “gives [us] even more motivation” to continue developing our cultural programme, and strengthen San Roque’s position as a reference for culture within the Campo de Gibraltar.
San Roque Jazz Festival was launched in 2019 in order to celebrate jazz at Campo de Gibraltar. It showcases national and international artists, blending classic big‑band sounds with contemporary styles, and has quickly become a key cultural event.
San Roque park opens
San Roque also welcomed a new family destination with the official opening of Parque Temático de Villa Victoria, and it’s already turning heads as one visitor commented, “¡Espectacular!”
Nestled between Puente Mayorga and Campamento, Villa Victoria covers around 6,000 m² and celebrates the sea and its people through its design. The wide paths, the fountains and sculpted vegetation, as well as a large play area for children with a zip line and climbing “globe”, and an eight-metre-high fisherman statue honouring the maritime heritage of the town, are all available to visitors.
Deputy Mayor Ana Ruiz called the park “a space for the whole family to enjoy together” and noted it builds on the success of the nearby Parque Barbésula. Many neighbours were present for the opening, which was held in the late afternoon of November.
Villa Victoria offers a new place for anyone living in the Bay Area to go on a stroll, burn off energy with their kids, or have a picnic while enjoying the sea breeze. The park plans to host workshops and seasonal events to allow local schools to make creative use of the space throughout the year.
Ladies Golf Tournament
In sport, the XXX Ladies Team Golf Tournament teed off last Saturday, November 8, at the La Cañada Golf Club in San Roque, marking the 30th edition of this popular women’s team competition.
The 26 teams and 104 participants enjoyed a morning of friendly competition under crisp autumnal skies. The format combined Stableford individual scoring with team results to create plenty of excitement on the fairways. Participants praised the well-maintained course and the challenge presented by La Cañada’s signature holes.
Local officials, including Deputy Mayor Eva Gil and Belén Jiménez, were on hand to greet participants and present the awards, underlining the event’s importance not just as a sporting competition, but as a social highlight for women golfers across the region.
The tournament was created in order to encourage the participation of women in golf. It has since grown into an event that is a must attend on the Costa del Sol. A competitor commented, “It is always a fun day out with challenging golf and great company. There’s a real community feeling.” The 30th edition of the tournament met expectations with its smooth logistics, lively competition, and lots of laughter both on and off course.
Fans of golf and newcomers interested in the local scene will find the Costa del Sol Golf Tournament a wonderful showcase of sportsmanship, skill, and camaraderie.
