History, beauty, authenticity and life in its purest form come together to compose the symphony that is the city of Cadiz in the Andalucía region of southern Spain – a place where the simple act of strolling and breathing in the aromas of the sea becomes a real pleasure. It is a city full of things to see and do, with a warm welcome for visitors.

The Plaza de San Juan de Dios in the centre of the city is one the most iconic spots. It is considered to be one the most beautiful European squares, a place of meeting that tells the story of the city.

During the past, it was called Plaza Mayor and La Corredera. It was located next to the Puerta del Mar, now known as the Arco del Pópulo.

According to history, the square had been one of the busiest places in the city by the 16th century. It was also well-connected with the port. It was also where the town hall was located.

In the 18th century Cadiz almost became the capital of the World, as this was the place where the trade with the Indies originated. In this city, all sorts of goods arrived to fill the markets. The market in those days was located at Plaza de San Juan de Dios. It served as both the administrative and commercial centre.

In a little more than 10 years, the square went through a series of improvements that enhanced its beauty. They also banned cars from the area, allowing visitors and residents to stroll in peace. Tourists can view the town hall from the square. They can also see the San Juan de Dios Church and Casa de los Pazo Miranda.

Numerous restaurants have terraces in the area and there is a large fountain at the center. This adds to the overall experience. Above the square, the monument dedicated to politician Segismundo Muchet can be seen. Moret served as the minister for overseas territories at the end of the 19th century. He was also part of a team of politicians that took steps to abolish slavery on Puerto Rico. He served as prime minister from 1905 to 1906.

The area where the square now stands was once covered by sea. It is now a busy place and the gateway to the old part of town.
