The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a major warning as a series of Atlantic storms – described as a ‘train of weather fronts’ – prepares to sweep across Spain this week.

The weather pattern is expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and a noticeable decrease in temperatures across most of the country, but especially the northern half.

According to AEMETSpain and Balearic Islands are still under the influence Atlantic Circulation. There will be successive fronts that bring rain and cloudy skies. At the end of today, a high cloud cover will be dominating the skies in southern Spain and Balearic Islands.

Galicia is expected to be the hardest hit, with intense thunderstorms and showers. This will happen in the western areas. AEMET has issued a yellow warning for rain and coastal waves starting at 6 p.m. It is forecasting winds up to 61 km/h and 40 litres/square metre of rainfall in 12 hours.

Rainfall will be less intense and less frequent in the rest of peninsula towards the south and the east. However, the southeast coast may remain dry.

Colder weather and strong winds across the country

The unsettled conditions will bring a general temperature drop, especially across the Cantabrian Coast and the river valleys flowing to the Atlantic. The temperatures could rise slightly in the upper Ebro and Mediterranean valleys.

Night-time temperatures will also fall in parts of Castilla y León and the eastern Cantabrian coast, while slight increases are expected in the rest of the country and in the Balearic Islands. Conditions in the Canary Islands will be stable with cloudy skies, and there is a possibility of some light rain on the mountainous terrain.

Another major factor will be the wind, which is expected to blow mainly out of the southwest and west. In northern Galicia and western Asturias as well as high-altitude regions of the Cantabrian Mountains, strong or very powerful gusts are predicted. Powerful gusts could also hit the eastern mountains and the northern Iberian system, with windy spells expected in Ampurdán and around the Alborán Sea throughout the day.

Storm Train continues through the Week

Meteorologists predict that the successive passage of storm fronts will continue to affect Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y León and other northern regions in the coming days, bringing persistent rain and gusty winds.

Forecasts for the future are based on eltiempo.es, rainfall accumulations could exceed 100 litres per square metre between Monday and Wednesday in Galicia, Asturias, and the southern slopes of the Cantabrian Mountains — with some parts of western Galicia potentially reaching 180 to 200 litres per square metre.

While the intensity is expected to be lower in central Spain and eastern Spain, strong to moderate southwesterly wind will dominate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Gusts exceeding 80 to 90km/h are also possible in mountainous regions. The winds are expected to decrease by Thursday except for the Cantabrian Coast, where strong gusts and rough seas could persist.

Looking towards the end of the week, weather models suggest a possible change in the current Atlantic pattern, with the arrival of a new Atlantic trough that could alter weather conditions from Friday onwards — potentially marking a fresh wave of instability as autumn deepens across the Iberian Peninsula.
