Estepona celebrates the arrival of warmer weather with a splash of color. The townhall has confirmed more than 400,000 shrubs and flowers will be placed in public gardens and promenades as well squares and main avenues.
Estepona will look its best in the tourist peak season. Planting began several weeks ago, and will continue through August. The plants are all from the town’s municipal nursery. This helps to reduce costs and ensures a variety of high quality blooms.
Petunias (also known as petunias), begonias (also called begonias), calendulas (also known as calendulas), lobelias (also know by the name lobelias), impatiens zinnias tagetes pelargoniums and bright red celosias were used. The gardening team also tests new plants in order to determine which ones grow well in various parts of the city.
The campaign is a part of the project “Estepona – Garden of the Costa del Sol”, which has helped to shape the image and charm of the town. Estepona increased its green space by 60% between 2012 and 2014, reaching more than 800,000 sqm. This figure is more than double the national average of green space per person.
Estepona has won five ‘Andalucía en Flor’ awards and was recognised with the ‘Málaga Viva’ prize in 2023 for sustainable and climate-conscious public gardening.
Blas Ruzafa, a councillor in the city of Toronto, thanked municipal gardeners Blas Ruzafa for their colorful displays. He said that their work is a great way to attract visitors and give locals green areas they can be proud.
