Cupra Born, the latest version. Cupra
Cupra launched the new version of Born, the first electric car from the brand. It was a car that stood out when it was launched from other similar EVs. This writer believes it retains its style advantage. As little needed to be changed, the changes in the styling were subtle. The interior and battery changes are more detailed than a simple facelift.
The trim levels offer a variety of features, including copper highlights, sculptured seats that are incredibly comfortable, bucket seats in the VZ Sport model and generously equipped models. The bucket seats on the VZ are a bit close to the rear seats, but they’re still worth it.
The exterior of the new Born features restyled bumpers on both front and back, Matrix LED triangular lights, and a CUPRA logo illuminated in the 3D rear lighting. It does not adopt the slab front design, which is all too common amongst EVs. This latest Born is a sensible evolution, not a revolution.
A redesigned steering-wheel with physical controls is available. New textures and fabrics give the interior a higher-quality feel. There’s also a larger digital cockpit measuring 10.25″/26cm, which includes an augmented reality display. Sennheiser Contrabass has also been used to upgrade the sound system for improved bass performance.
When it comes to performance, this latest Born delivers the usual EV electrifying – excuse the pun – performance with the 326hp VZ model passing the benchmark 100kph/62mph time in 5.6 seconds. Even non-performance models have a very decent performance. The four motor-battery combinations are available, as is launch control and the One Pedal Driving System. Wider tyres can be fitted to both 48cm/19” and 50cm/20′” wheels.
The Born V1 or V2 can achieve a range between 449km and 279 miles with the 58kWh batteries. Both models, as well as the VZ, are capable of reaching a range around 598km and 372 miles using the enhanced 79kWh batteries. The car can also be customised with six exterior colours – including the new Timanfaya Grey.
Cupra’s Born has been a pleasant place to travel and has a personality that is lacking in many of its rivals. It also has a pleasingly distinct personality from the ID, which belongs to the VW stable. The car was officially launched last week. Prices, detailed specifications and driving impressions will be released soon.
