Xabi Alonso quits German club before expected return to Real Madrid as coach

Xabi Alonso leaves German club ahead of expected return to Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso has announced that he will be leaving Bayer Leverkusen after the season.

Alonso, 43, is believed to have clinched a three-year deal with his ex-club to replace Carlo Ancelotti in what has been pretty much an ‘open secret’.

In a press conference, the former midfielder announced that he is moving on from his successful three-year stint as manager of the German team.

Alonso said to reporters: “Why have I decided to leave?” It’s all about football moments. “Sometimes, choosing the right one can be the most difficult decision.”

“We always have a good communication with the Club, and that was one of my reasons for staying last year. It hasn’t changed this year but maybe the energy is different.

Alonso turned Bayer Leverkusen into a dominant force during his tenure at the club. He won two titles.

Alonso had also been rumoured as a candidate for the Bayern Munich vacancy in the summer of last year, but he chose to remain at Leverkusen.

Pressed on Friday about his impending return to Real Madrid, Alonso said it was ‘not time to talk about the future’.

He added, “The moment we feel we have met our obligations will be the time for the next step.”

Carlo Ancelotti won the La Liga and Champions League twice during his second spell as Real Madrid manager.

Real Madrid’s current campaign has been disappointing. Barcelona leads La Liga by 4 points. But with the El Clasico match this Sunday at Nou Camp, Real Madrid is under pressure to win.
