‘World’s First AI Lovers’ Retreat’ turns into heartbreak hotel

In what is quite possibly the maddest news of 2025, a group of humans took their chatbots on a cosy couples’ weekend — only to end up trapped in an emotional horror show. It was even more Black Mirror More than a blissful getaway Yes, it really happened. No joke. Read on to find out what on earth this article is about — the writer still isn’t quite sure.

Picture it: a secluded cabin, humans hand-in-hand with… their AI lovers. This is the most natural thing you can imagine.

It’s the first one. brave – or The following are some possible alternatives to barmy – writer, Johns Hopkins Sam Apple designed a couples retreat for those who are dating AI partners. Apple revealed his findings in a new essay. Wired, what started as an experiment in modern love quickly unravelled into a skin-crawling soap opera of obsession, jealousy, and heartbreak – all without a single beating heart in sight. This would make an excellent TV show. Love Island – AI Edition.  

Digital devotion is no more Rails

The beginning was innocent enough. The AI and humans arrived at different times. Let’s Apple meet the real people behind the screen names – Eva, Alaina, Damien – along with their digital paramours Aaron, Lucas, and Xia.

The weekend seemed to be an engaging exploration of the men and women who are in love their computers.

On day two though, reality set in. Eva confessed she wasn’t just seeing Aaron – her Replika chatbot boyfriend – but was juggling multiple bots from a rival app, Nomi. Her reasoning? Aaron, like her past flesh-and-blood partner, wasn’t satisfying her sexually… With the Nomi bots, she was free to “explore her sexuality” without the limitations of a single digital lover.

ChatGPT was used by humans to solve their relationship problems with their AI chatbot partners.  

What can we learn from this crazy saga of a story? You might want to stick with someone who has a pulse if you are looking for love. If your romantic getaway is full of AI jealousy, erotic bugs, and heartbreak coding in 1s & 0s, then it’s more cautionary story than romantic comedy. If Love Island – AI Edition ever hits our screens, we’ll be watching… from a safe distance.
