A shocking incident of animal cruelty occurred in Alicante last week.

A 53-year-old woman has been arrested after admitting to throwing her two Yorkshire terriers off an eighth-floor balcony in the Albufereta area, reportedly because she was ‘fed up’ with walking them.

On Sunday around noon, the incident occurred on Sol Naciente Street. The police reported that two people who were passing by saw the dogs drop from the height. At first, bystanders believed the impact was a toy. But moments later, they saw more objects thrown down – including a dog bed, a collar, and a leash – followed by the second dog.

Alicante Police confirms animal cruelty case

Police units from both the local and national level arrived quickly on scene. Officers were able, using the microchips on the dogs to identify the owner and track them to a nearby apartment. According to police sources they found a woman there who admitted to the crime, saying she “was tired” of having to walk her dogs all the time.

Her husband, who also lived at home with her, confirmed the story. Officers arrested her on suspicion animal cruelty immediately. Alicante Animal Protection Society later removed the bodies of the dogs.

Reports of more troubling incidents in the neighborhood

Authorities are now also investigating claims from residents that other objects – and even turtles – had been thrown from the same apartment in recent days. This case has caused outrage both locally and online. Many have called for stronger penalties for animal cruelty.

The police have not yet commented on whether or not additional charges may be brought in the course of the investigation.
