It seems that there is something going on at Wimbledon in the first week. This means the seeding may have been completely illogical as some players are excelling.
In the beginning, 32 men’s and women’s seeds were announced. After the first week of play, however, 23 men, and 24 women, had been dumped by players who weren’t seeded or fancied.
Even the ‘stars’ of the tennis world are having fairly difficult wins and apart from Sinner players like Alcaraz and Djokovic seem to be having trouble finding top form.
Wimbledon, please, new balls as seeds are knocked off
One good thing about so many seeds being knocked out is that it gives players who have been ‘under the radar’ a chance to shine although at the end of the week, there was only one Brit left in the singles mix and that’s Cameron Norrie who faces number two seed Alcaraz in the quarter finals.
One of the reasons why seedings can be so inaccurate is because, until 2020 they were based off a player’s achievements on grass courts. However, from 2021 onwards the seeds are based off their world rankings.
Wimbledon: new balls are needed for some players who find it difficult to switch to grass.
Many players find it difficult to play on grass courts because the ball bounces lower and faster on grass courts than on clay courts.
The weather at Wimbledon in the first week hasn’t helped, with a number of breaks in play for rain, whilst some players insist that the removal of line judges has meant that a number of ‘calls’ by radar judges have been poor with one match even having ‘Hawkeye’ shouting Stop Stop!
