Real Madrid is closing an era this season.
Luka Modric, a club icon and one of its most iconic players is preparing to depart from the Spanish capital in the summer.
The 39-year old Croatian sent a farewell message before his final La Liga match in the famed white shirt.
Madrid’s Last Dance
Modric will play one last time for ‘Los Blancos’ at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 25, when Real Madrid host Real Sociedad in their closing fixture of the 2024/25 La Liga season.
The club’s 13-year tenure will be marked by the end of a legendary period, which has seen the club win 4 La Liga titles and 6 UEFA Champions League trophies, as well as 5 FIFA Club World Cup championships.
Modric, once seen as the face Real Madrid’s policy to renew players over 30 on one-year contracts is now on a new path. The club has stated that it is time to move on.
Modric isn’t the only player to leave Madrid. He will leave alongside Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti. Xabi Alonso is reportedly waiting for the opportunity to oversee a brand new chapter in Madrid history.
What’s next in the life of Luka Modric
Modric’s Real Madrid career is not over yet.
The midfield master is determined to lead Croatia to the FIFA World Cup 2026 and will likely sign a short term deal after this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Sources suggest that Modric, despite being linked to a move to Saudi Pro League (SPL), would rather switch to Major League Soccer. He could join the growing list European stars who are moving to the United States.
Who will replace Modric as Madrid’s new captain?
While incoming manager Xabi alonso intends to strengthen primarily the defense, speculation continues over Luka Modric’s long-term succession.
According to Fichajes.net, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has been identified as the ideal replacement, despite Liverpool setting a €90 million price tag on the Argentine international.
Mac Allister, 26 years old, was a key player for Liverpool this season. Mac Allister made 49 appearances with the Reds and scored seven goals. He also provided six assists. Mac Allister, born in Santa Rosa in La Pampa in Argentina, has been playing football in England since 2019. He was signed by Brighton. Liverpool brought him in 2023 for €42 million.
Real Madrid could be laying the foundations for a possible future move, even though Mac Allister publicly rejected the idea of leaving Anfield in the summer. The rumoured switch of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Madrid may influence future discussions between the clubs.
