The improved water supplies following the heavy rains of March will allow showers and footwashers to return to Malaga’s beaches this summer.
Although a final decision is still awaiting a completed technical report, there are hopes that the service will be reactivated due to the increased groundwater withdrawal from newly found wells.
A spokesperson from the Popular Party of Malaga expressed optimism over the prospects. ‘In theory, everything is pointing to there being showers on the beaches this summer,’ citing encouraging data on water resources. But she did not set a date for the summer showers, saying that the council’s assessment of the city’s current water situation is still in its final stages. ‘Our decisions are not random; they stem from careful and responsible deliberation,’ she added.
The council representative stressed that Malaga is now out of the drought restrictions. However, he also emphasized the need to continue using water responsibly. The recent closure of beach-showers was necessary for the Costa del Sol to have a reliable water supply.
The water recovery in Malaga is given a significant boost by a large well located near the mouth of the Guadalhorce river, close to Malaga Airport. This resource allows the Malaga Municipal Water Company, (Emasa), to better manage their daily supply while preserving reservoir levels for future requirements.
The final decision should be made in a couple of weeks. If the outcome is positive, then Easter showers are planned.
