Fuengirola council has inaugurated ‘Somos España’, a grand cultural and educational project featuring six bronze murals that chronicle the defining milestones of Spain’s history, from its origins to the present day.
The monumental urban initiative, created by local artist Paco Pérez in collaboration with Charo García, was unveiled in the town’s Plaza de España by Mayor Ana Mula, alongside the artists, in a ceremony marking the 184th anniversary of Fuengirola’s official establishment as a town.
The six bronze reliefs, each weighing 1.2 tonnes and measuring 3×2 metres, are now prominently displayed in the planters of Plaza de España. The murals tell the story of Spain from prehistory to modern times.
“‘Somos España’—we couldn’t have chosen a better title for this project, into which we’ve poured so much affection and enthusiasm,” Mayor Mula declared during the event. “As representatives of the public, we are obligated to show off our rich history, starting with its earliest inhabitants and continuing to this day. Fuengirola is proudest of all to be a part of this wonderful country. “We are proud of being Spanish.”
Mula and the artist revealed the bronze panels at the unveiling. They were created to serve three purposes: to honour Spain’s historical heritage, while also providing an educational tool, to enhance Fuengirola’s aesthetic appeal, and to introduce QR codes, which will be a new innovation. QR codes enable visitors to view detailed explanations about each panel, providing an interactive guide of the historical scenes shown.
“‘Somos España’ perfectly aligns with the identity of our land: a modern, cosmopolitan, and open city that is also a vital part of Spain’s national project,” Mula stressed. “This initiative pays respect to our history while paving the path for a brighter future. It is a reflection of the values of Fuengirola and its spirit, and it has become a mark of distinction far beyond the municipal borders of Fuengirola and the envy of those around us.”
The event, held in Plaza de España, featured performances by professors from the Fuengirola Music Conservatory and students from the Municipal House of Culture’s Ballet School, adding a cultural flourish to the occasion.
