WATCH: Storm Emilia brings torrential storms to Spain as RED alert issued for Valencia and Andalucia – 250mm of rain could fall on Sunday with severe risk of flooding

PARTS of eastern Spain are bracing for torrential weather after the state meteorological agency issued a rare red alert for heavy rainfall – indicating an ‘extreme risk’ to life.

The red weather alert is in effect for the entire Valencia coast, as well as Valle del Almanzora y Los Velez (in Almeria).

In Valencia, over 250mm of rain is forecast to drench the region from Sunday lunchtime until Monday morning – over a year on from the devastating DANA floods that claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

Up to 180mm of rain could fall in just 12 hours, increasing the risk of flash flooding – with warnings also in place for possible waterspouts and small tornados.

Aemet (Spain’s national weather agency) predicts 120mm of rainfall in Almeria, as Emilia continues its assault on Spain.

Residents are encouraged to follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.

Orange alerts have been issued for Valencia, the north coast of Alicante, Almeria, and north-east Murcia. Up to 40mm is expected to fall within an hour.

Yellow warnings are active also in Castellon Alicante and Almeria’s coastline.

After activating red alert, the Spanish football federation has suspended the Sunday La Liga match between Levante vs Alicante.

The federation announced that “due to safety recommendations in relation to the torrential downpours forecasted in the Valencia area, and after red alert warnings issued by Spain’s weather agency, the RFEF Competitions Judge has decided to delay the match,” it said in a press release.
