Dramatic footage of the rescue of a mountaineer in Lleida has been released by Catalonia’s Generalitat.
A MAER helicopter was deployed on Saturday afternoon along with a GRAE unit, SEM doctors, and two ground teams to rescue a man stranded.
After injuring his leg while climbing Wild Planet in Vilanova de Meia, Lleida, the climber who was not named required emergency assistance.
At 3:20 PM the fire department was alerted to the incident, which led to the immediate activation and deployment of emergency services.
This footage shows the chaos of the situation, as rescue specialists descend from the helicopter with strong winds swirling around.
The injured climber and a friend were stuck on the vertical rock face. It was an extremely difficult operation.
The rescue operation was successful and no other incidents occurred.
The man was treated in the parking lot before being transported to Arnau de Vilanova Hospital Lleida.
The limestone walls of Vilanova de Meia, a popular Spanish destination for thrill seekers, are a real challenge.
The Roca dels Arcs routes have been described as ‘serious undertakings’ and are ‘often undergraded.’
It is possible that climbers underestimated the difficulty of the climbs. This can lead to accidents like this.
