Policía Nacional officers on a quiet street after an arrest

Wanted Romanian fugitive arrested over violent robbery

Police in Dénia have arrested a 30-year-old Romanian man wanted on a European arrest warrant over a violent robbery and assault case dating back to 2019.

The suspect was detained by Policía Nacional officers after a member of the Dénia station spotted that he was being sought by the Romanian authorities and checked his details against police databases.

Officers confirmed that the warrant had been active since 21 August this year. They then located him in the town and carried out the arrest in the street.

According to police information, the man is wanted in relation to a robbery in the Romanian city of Târgoviște, where he is accused of acting with another man in a street attack on two victims.

In that case, investigators say one victim was pinned to the ground while a mobile phone was taken, and the second was allegedly punched in the face when he tried to intervene.

The offence is reported to carry a possible sentence of up to three years in prison under Romanian law.

After the arrest, the man was taken to the Dénia police station for the usual formalities before being brought before the Central Court of Instruction of the National High Court in Madrid, which handles extradition matters.

Police said the man also had a criminal record in Spain, mainly for property-related offences.
