The €300 million superyacht KaosThe, which is owned by Walmart’s heiress Nancy Walton Laurie and has been docked for several weeks in Malaga. It consumes staggering amounts of electricity.
According to LuxurylaunchesThe 110-metre vessel requires an estimated 7.2 Megawatt-hours per day of electricity to run its systems, which is enough to power approximately 250 American households.
The sleek metallic profile of the towering yacht is easy to spot on Malaga Pier number 1. Behind the glamour is a reality that’s not so glamorous: Even when Laurie isn’t on board, KaosAir conditioning, stabilisers (including kitchens), and other systems continue to use a large amount of energy.
Why does the Kaos superyacht use so much electricity?
Operating more as a luxury resort than a private vessel Kaos There are 31 permanent crew members and 45 guests. Continuous systems include:
- HVAC cooling up to 220kW on hot days
- Stabilisers: 20–60 kW to keep the vessel steady in harbour
- Kitchens and laundry: Professional kitchens, washers, and dryers operating daily
- Water systems: Desalination and sewage treatment units requiring 10–25 kW
- Leisure facilities: Pools, spas, and gyms adding 10–30 kW
- Technology and Lighting: AV Racks, WiFi, CCTV, and decorative lights
Together, these requirements amount to about 300 kW continuous loads, which means Kaos consumes roughly €2,800–€3,600 in electricity daily while idle.
The Kaos Superyacht Story
Built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, in 2017. Jubilee Qatar’s Emir Kaos Laurie acquired the yacht in 2019 and remodeled it extensively. The 110 metre yacht is still the largest ever built in Holland.
The yacht features:
- 15 Guest Suites with a Private Owner’s Deck
- Beach club, cinema and hammam. Pool with views of the aquarium.
- Hospital and helicopter deck
- Crew of 45 in 24 cabins
