“Big on inside.” “Big inside. Volkswagen’s slogan for its Polo was used 50 years earlier to promote the product. When the small car came on the market in early May 1975, nobody expected that this extremely compact two-door car would become such a bestseller – nationally and internationally, over five decades, in six generations and more than 20 million examples sold worldwide.

Volkswagen’s new model family, which included the Polos when they first hit the dealerships in the 1970s, was already gaining momentum. The small angular car, introduced in spring 1975, followed the Passat (from 1973) and Golf (from 1974) from the young, water-cooled model family that replaced the legendary VW Beetle. Over six generations of models, the Polo remains a hugely popular model. The national and international media have recognized the Polo with awards like Car of the Year 2010, World Car of the Year 2010 or World Urban Car 2018.

What began as a simple two-door vehicle in 1975 has been perfected and expanded in many facets over five decades: in a total of six generations, as a hatchback, Coupé, and as a sporty G40 or GTI1As a colourful Harlequin, an estate, a CrossPolo resembling a CrossPolo, with an off-road appearance, as efficient BlueMotion, and as a very successful R WRC that was crowned by four World Championships titles in the World Rally Championships from 2013 to 2016

With each generation, the Polo was improved with features such as airbags front and sides, power steering and belt tensioners. This ensured the Polo’s success. Polo has many assistive and convenience systems, which are usually only found in vehicles of higher class. Its popularity around the world is undiminished, and will continue to be updated in the next year.

Volkswagen Wolfsburg began production of the Polo in March 1975. By 1981, 1.1 million Polos were produced at Wolfsburg. The model became more popular and production spread around the globe, including to Spain, Argentina South Africa, Slovenia China Brazil India. The Polo has been sold in more than 20,000,000 units, making it one of the most popular small compact cars on the market.
