Velerín Tower, on the outskirts of Estepona, in one of the most luxurious neighbourhoods in the country, has received a makeover with a new green area around the historic tower.
The new garden is 5,000 square meters and contains a variety of Mediterranean native species of plants.
Locals and visitors can now enjoy this historical jewel, dating back to the second half 16th century. The monument has also been fitted with scenic lighting, both inside and outside. This allows it to be enjoyed at night.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has said that this project, in addition to valuing the heritage wealth of the area, adds to the attractiveness of the zone, not least for users of the coastal walkway.
The Velerín tower is one of the seven ancient watchtowers that are distributed along the coast of Estepona. These towers are historical reminders of a defence system that was in place until the late 19th century and fought against pirate landings.
The mayor stated that the restoration of historic landmarks on the Estepona coast is aimed at recovering the historical heritage of Estepona. This includes plans to open the Castle of San Luis in the Old Town to the public.
