UEFA has hired caricaturists who have previously been banned from the streets of Marbella by the local council to display their talents.
In September, artists will visit UEFA’s headquarters to create portraits for club representatives. This is a similar role to what they performed a couple of months ago.
One of the artists affected by the ruling, José Manuel Álvarez, expressed his frustration over the council’s decision, and questioned why José Eduardo Díaz, councillor for Public Spaces, had blocked their street work and ignored multiple requests for clarification.
Marbella Council has defended its position. It stated that Public Spaces Department temporarily halted all permits for street performers in order to address complaints by residents and local business. The council suggested that the Culture or Commerce Departments could work together to coordinate cultural or promotional events. This is especially true during times of low public attendance.
However, caricaturists argue that they can’t see how the drawing could cause a disturbance or conflict.
